"Chilo" Alaniz District Attorney's Office Updat Jan. 24, 2025 Isidro R. “Chilo” Alaniz became the democratic nominee for District Attorney by taking over seventy-one percent of the votes in a runoff election held on April 8, 2008. In the November 2008 election, he ran unopposed to become the District Attorney for the 49th Judicial District of Texas. He was sworn into office at an investiture ceremony held on January 1, 2009, in the Webb County Central Jury Room where State Representative Richard Pena-Raymond administered the oath of office. A Nixon High School graduate, Mr. Alaniz attended the University of Texas at San Antonio and then studied law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He began his legal career in 1995 and soon joined the Webb and Zapata County District Attorney’s Office in 1996. As an Assistant District Attorney, he became chief prosecutor for the child abuse unit in 1998. He next served as a Federal Public Defender (1999-2002) before embarking upon a successful private practice. Mr. Alaniz is Board certified as a Criminal Law Specialist and has served as the Vice President of the Laredo Young Lawyers Association (1997), CLE Director for the Webb County Bar Association (1998), and is a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas (1998). In 1999, he traveled to El Salvador with the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.) to conduct training seminars on the investigation and prosecution of sexual abuse crimes. Mr. Alaniz was appointed by the President of the State Bar of Texas to serve on the State Bar of Texas Child Abuse and Neglect Committee (1999-2002). He served as President of the Webb County Bar Association (2000) was appointed by the State Bar President to the local Bar Services Committee (2002) and served on the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee, District 12 (2002-2007). He was honored in 2002 as having been selected by Federal District Court Judge Keith P. Ellison to attend the 5th Circuit Judicial Conference and, in 2005, was selected by Law & Politics and Texas Monthly as a Texas Rising Star Super Lawyer. Mr. Alaniz is married to Elia P. Alaniz, a local educator, and they have three children.
